Be my guest

A thoughtfully prepared guest bathroom can leave a lasting impression – and what better time to fine-tune a pampered welcome than at Christmas. Practicality and function are important but taking inspiration from a favourite hotel-stay can help create a really lovely space, for guests now and to escape to later.

Practical planning

With careful planning, you can create a space that works for all generations; one that’s safe and comfortable, easy to keep clean and easy to ‘turn-around’ between visits. Do you have lots of families with young children visiting, where a baths important?  Would a double-ended bath work best, with taps sited in the middle? Or would a shower suffice, to maximise floor space and accommodate multi-generational stays.

General storage

Good practical storage is really important.  Vanities and open surfaces work well for guests.  Designs like our Hanging Reclaimed Teak Vanity Unit provide lots of easily accessible space for washbags and for towels, which can be stored in rolls within the deep bottom drawer to keep things tidy.  Our Teak Root Floating Vanity is also a great option and provides lots of set-down room either side of a basin and frees up floor space for a large basket or stool.

Bath and shower storage

Shelf space in the shower cubical or near a bath is an important consideration.  It keeps floor areas safe and air circulating.  It’s also a thoughtful addition; nobody likes a shower tray or narrow bath ledge cluttered with bottles.  Extra space can easily be added with a carefully placed stool too, or an over-bath caddy.

Functionality

If you’re planning a space from scratch, ease of function and maintenance should be considered.  Simple bath and shower controls that are easy to navigate are the best, along with robust, easy care shower doors or screens and lighting that’s easy to access when bulbs need changing.  In terms of surfaces, porcelain floor and wall tiles are a great option; they’re exceptionally durable, easy to maintain and a great partner to underfloor heating for added comfort.

Embracing nature

Natural materials, like wood and stone, add much needed texture to a guest bathroom.   They can be introduced on walls, floors or through accessories, like a large statement Driftwood Mirror, framed artwork, a rustic towel rail or vanity.  For a more individual look, choose a basin or bath made from wood or stone.  Oversized basins, like our Petrified Wood design, provide a stunning feature and valuable extra space to cater for couples and families visiting together.

Thoughtful styling

A few spa-like touches will transform a guest bathroom and it’s easy to adapt them to suit guests.  Plenty of warm, fluffy towels, miniature toiletries, greenery and fresh florals can really make a space.  Warming, spicy scents, like cinnamon, clove and orange, can also be added with fresh herbs, reed diffusers and candles and then switched for uplifting florals when the new year arrives.
